Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease)

Healthy gums stay firm and are pink in color. Therefore, if you find your gums are facing redness and swelling conditions, it is an indication that you have gum related problems. Many people have problem of bleeding gums, pain and swelling in gum line. These are the signs that your gums are infected by bacteria which are gradually making them weak. This kind of infection can get severe and even spoil the whole jaw structure if not get treated in the nick of time. After sometime, your teeth will get loosely bound to the gum and will be ultimately decayed.

These kinds of infections around the teeth that cause serious oral problems are regarded as Periodontal Diseases. The term “Periodontal” defines itself as “Perio” means “around” and “dontal” refers to dental. Periodontal diseases affects your gum-line, periodontal ligaments along with the alveolar bone, making the tissues weakly bound and hence, you face pain, swelling, and sometimes problem of bleeding gums in the major stages of infection.

There are many common types of periodontal disease including aggressive, chronic, necrotizing periodontitis, and periodontitis associated with systemic diseases. Each of these types of periodontal disease has its own distinct characteristics and symptoms, and all require prompt treatment by a dentist to halt subsequent bone and tissue loss.

Gum Infection

If the gums begin to bleed, we may presume to have a gum problem issue, although this is certainly not a definite indication. Periodontists consider other factors, such as gum redness, the presence of pus, and poor taste in the mouth.
Receding gums and visible gaps between teeth are also obvious signs of periodontal disease and tooth gum infection. Also, look out for teeth gum problem warnings if they display sensitivity towards the cold food.

What are symptoms of gum disease?

It is extremely important to note that gum disease can progress without any signs or symptoms such as pain. This is why regular dental checkups are exceptionally important. Described below are some of the most common signs and symptoms of periodontitis.
In general Gum disease is a painless, symptom less disease and if not treated in time one may loose all the teeth.
If you have any of these signs or symptoms, the advice of a general dentist or periodontist should be sought as soon as possible:
•Bad breath/halitosis
•Bleeding from gums
•Pain, redness or swelling
•Longer-looking teeth
• Deep pockets between the teeth and the gums
• Loose teeth, in the later stages
•Receding gums from tooth
Remember, BLEEDING FROM GUMS while brushing teeth might be a sign of gum disease (gingivitis) at early stage. So it should not be ignored !!

Treatment of Gum Disease

In the case of moderate Gum disease, the pockets (under the gumline) of the teeth will be completely cleared of debris using a procedure called scaling and root planing. The pockets may be filled with antibiotics to promote good healing and kill any bacteria that remain.

Severe periodontitis can be treated in several different ways, such as:

Non-surgical Treatment of Gum Treatment: The primitive treatment in case of gum disease is tooth scaling and root planning. In this treatment, the plaque that has been built on your teeth is removed by tiny dental tools and the roots are smooth to prevent bacteria in your gum pockets. Post, tooth scaling and root planning, it gets easier for teeth to re-attach to the gums and the dentist will guide you to follow healthy oral habits and occasional visits to the dental centre.

Tissue & bone grafting: Where a considerable amount of bone or gum tissue has been destroyed, the dentist may elect to graft new tissue by inserting a membrane to stimulate tissue growth.
Pocket elimination surgery: The dentist may choose to perform “flap surgery” to directly reduce the size of the gum pockets

Regaining healthy gums

Healthy gums are essential for maintaining good dental health, and it can be accomplished by following proper oral health procedures.

STEP 1 – Brush your teeth at least two minutes twice a day with a short-headed brush having smooth rounded bristles. It demands toothpaste containing fluoride daily to physically eliminate bacterial plaques at the junctions of gums and teeth, which assists in maintaining a good seal. If used twice a day, it is four times more effective than a regular toothpaste, reducing the accumulation of bacteria, which is one of the causes and reason of swollen gum pain and bleeding.
STEP 2 – Use dental floss to remove plaque from tough to reach areas such as in between the teeth. Ensure to use floss with care, as it may harm the gums
STEP 3 – Visit the dentist routinely for inspection. As a professional, they can detect gum issues before you see the signs. Dentists may also perform teeth cleaning procedures to eliminate more complex and stubborn bacterial plaques residuals (counts), thereby preventing the formation of unwanted gum disease and relieving gum pain.

Follow these three measures to stay away from gum disorder while keeping your gums strong and healthy.
Gingival bleeding needs personal care to identify its cause carefully and carrying out the most suitable treatment. We will examine your condition and be able to suggest the most appropriate treatment for your gums.
